Thelma S. Halsey

Thelma S. Halsey, 94, of Bluefield, WV, passed away peacefully Friday, January 6, 2023 at Stonerise of Charleston, WV with family by her side. Born October 24, 1928 she was the daughter of the late George Edward and Mary Elizabeth Mills Shrewsbury. A strong Christian and a long time active member of First Baptist Church of Bluefield, WV, her favorite scripture after losing her husband in 2002 was 2 Corinthians 5:8 “to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord”. Her family believes she is in Heaven having a wonderful time with God and reuniting with her beloved husband, Ivan. Mrs. Halsey was an avid flower and vegetable garderner and truly enjoyed working in her yard and gardens. She was still mowing her own lawn at 90 years of age! As a professional flower designer she was very active in the Little Gardens Club since the mid 1970s having served in various positions including President of her local club and District Director of West Virginia Garden Clubs. She joined the American Legion Auxilliary in 1989 and served in various positions and committees including President. Mrs. Halsey also maintained her long standing membership in the Order of the Eastern Star, Mullens, WV. She worked for many years as a volunteer for the American Red Cross monthly blood drive on Stadium Drive and was a member of the Friends of Craft Memorial Library and the Golden Age Club. She was also a supporter of Gideon’s International and the Greater Bluefield Chamber of Commerce. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters and three brothers, Latha Cooper, Nettie Chester, Pauline Archie, Roy Shrewsbury, Francis Shrewsbury, and Albert Shrewsbury. Mrs. Halsey is survived by her two daughters: Nancy H. Moore and husband, Dwight Moore of Bluefield, VA, and Belenda Halsey-Bell and husband, Hervie “Herb” Bell of Charleston, WV; three grandchildren: Robert Moore and wife, Karen Moore of Crozet, VA, Valerie Mullins and husband, Mike Mullins of Clayton, NC, and Andrew Bell of Columbus, OH; and four great-grandchildren: Ana Moore of Blacksburg, VA, Sarah Moore of Crozet, VA, Madison Mullins of Clayton,NC, and Bryce Mullins of Clayton, NC. Mrs. Halsey is also survived by brothers Clyde Shrewsbury, Fishersville, VA and Glen Shrewsbury and wife, Brenda Shrewsbury, Forest, VA and sisters Ruth Fox and husband, Kenneth, Sophia, WV and Rubie Burcham, Berryville, VA. The family will receive friends at Mercer Funeral Home & Crematory of Bluefield from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, January 13, 2023. Funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 14, 2023 at Mercer Funeral Home with Rev. Ed Fisher officiating. Entombment will follow at the mausoleum at Roselawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Princeton, WV. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to Gideon’s International.
