Nellie Elam

Bluefield, WV - Nellie Hasty Elam, 92, of Bluefield died at Westwood Medical Center on January 28, 2009. Born Nellie Lee Beadles to the late William R. Beadles and Alpha Lee Rice Beadles on March 11, 1916, she was preceded in death by husband, William D. Hasty, Sr. and her second husband, Robert Elam, by sisters Gertrude Clancy, Lynette Vick, Moselle Heath, Irene Cash, Agnes Hertless and brothers Clarence Elmo Beadles, James Lawrence Beadles and William Rylie Beadles, Jr. She is survived by her son, William D. Hasty, Jr. and his wife, Phyllis, of Bluefield, VA, grandsons W. David Hasty, III and his wife, Kathy, of Roanoke, VA, and J. Christopher Hasty of Roanoke, VA, three great granddaughters, Celayne, Destiny and Anna and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. Nellie Elam who lived most of her life in Richmond, VA and more recently in Highland Springs, VA was a past Worthy Matron of Ruth Chapter #8 of the Order of the Eastern Star, past president of the Old Dominion China Painting Club, a member of the Storytellers League, and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bluefield, WV and Presbyterian Women Circle #2. She was an owner of Hasty Specialty Company earlier in her working career as well as a devoted mother. Visitation will be Saturday January 31, 2009 from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at Mercer Funeral Home. A memorial service is scheduled for Sunday at 2:00 pm at the First Presbyterian Church officiated by Rev. Ed Pettus of Princeton Presbyterian Church and Carolyn Arbuckle of the Presbytery of West Virginia. Pallbearers will be Dave Hasty, Chris Hasty, Wilson Butt, Gary Denardo, James Godwin, III, David Dodson, Fred Dodson, and Allen Light. A graveside service will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Richmond, VA Tuesday February 3,2009 at 2:00 pm officiated by Rev. Won Un followed by a visitation at the Highland Springs United Methodist Church at 3:00 p.m. Memorial gifts may be made to the Presbyterian Women's Scholarship Fund at First Presbyterian Church, 208 Tazewell Avenue, Bluefield, WV 24701.
