Melissa Freeman Ball

Hillsborough, NC- Melissa Jane Freeman Ball, 58, of Hillsborough, NC, and formerly of Bluefield, died at her home on Wednesday December 21, 2011. Born June 10, 1953 in Bluefield, WV, Melissa was the daughter of W.J. Freeman and Imogene Freeman of Bluefield. She was a loving wife, mother, daughter and sister. She was a graduate of Bluefield High School and had attended Concord College and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. She was a former member of Bland Street United Methodist Church. Melissa was an avid gardener and truly loved being a homemaker. She was very active in civic affairs. She was President of the Bensley P.T.A., Vice President of the Bensley Civic Association, and she was the Recording Secretary of the Chesterfield County Council of P.T.A.s. Melissa was a Volunteer Fire Prevention Officer with the Cheserfield County, VA Fire Department. She also enjoyed genealogy, and was always willing to help others. She loved to travel and visit new places. Once you met Melissa, you were considered a friend. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Jack Wilson Ball of the home; one daughter, Victoria Jane Fleming and her husband James Stratton Fleming of Richmond, VA; one sister, Diane Beavers and husband Jerry of Bluefield, VA; brothers- and sisters-in-law, James Bradford Ball and wife Debbie of Bland, VA, John Calvin Ball and wife Gerri of Bluefield, Jeri Ball Snider and husband Randy of Bluewell, WV, and Jeanne Simmons and husband Bob of Rocky Gap, VA; and nephews, Jeremy Ball, Brian Beavers and wife Wendy, and Matt Beavers. A celebration of life will be held on Monday December 26, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. from the Mercer Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Bernie McBride officiating. The family will receive friends on Monday at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. until the service hour. In accordance with Melissa’s wishes, she will be cremated.
