Lawrence "Eddy" Atwell

Bluefield, WV- Lawrence Edward “Eddy” Atwell, 69, died Tuesday January 10, 2017 at his home. Eddy was the son of the late Velmer A. Atwell, Sr. and Billie Jean Cline Atwell of Bluefield, WV. Survived by son, Eric Atwell (Shannon Perdue- Atwell of Pembroke Pines, FL) and beloved grandchildren Abigail Atwell and Samuel Atwell; mother of his son, Barbara Atwell; brothers, Andy Atwell and wife Terri of Montoursville, PA, and Mark Kevin Atwell and wife Ann of Powhatan, VA; sister, Rebecca Ratcliffe and husband Bob of Bluefield WV, nephews, Jeff Atwell and wife Cynthia of Bluefield WV, and John Ratcliffe of Bluefield, WV; niece, Robyn Nelsen of Seabrooke, Texas; and his feline buddy, Sox. He graduated from Bluefield High School in 1965, attended Bluefield State College before proudly serving his Country in the 11th Armored Calvary from 1968-1969 in Vietnam. Eddy achieved the ranking of Specialist 4. He graduated from the United Stated Army Armor School in 1968. He was awarded numerous awards for is service before being honorably discharged in October 1969. Eddy was the owner and operator of East River Safety and Supply. He enjoyed fishing and boating, especially at Claytor Lake. Eddy was a devoted, loyal, and proud member of Disabled American Veterans #31, Vietnam Veterans of America #628 both of Princeton, WV and Veterans of Foreign Wars #9696 of Bluefield, VA. A memorial service will be held on Saturday January 21, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. from the Mercer Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Norm Arrington officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the service hour. Military Honors will be provided by the Mercer County Honor Guard and VFW Post #9696. Following the service Mr. and Mrs. Edward Simmons will have a reception for Eddy’s family and close friends. A private burial will be held at Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Dublin.
