Joy Anna Sarver

Bluefield, WV- Joy Anna Sarver, 83, of Bluefield, WV, died Sunday January 4, 2015 at her home. Born April 4, 1931 in Bluefield, WV, she was a daughter of the late Roy Allen Simmons and Grace Evelyn Taylor Simmons. Mrs. Sarver was a lifelong resident of Bluefield. She was a graduate of Bluefield High School and Bluefield State College. She was an English Honors teacher of Bluefield High School for 25 years where she had also served as the girl’s tennis coach. In her earlier years, she worked in her ministry at Westminster Presbyterian Church, and in her later years at First Presbyterian Church where she had been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award. Mrs. Sarver was a wonderful, loving and loyal mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a loving wife to Raymond “Corky” Sarver. She loved gardening and had participated in Circle at church. She had many friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond “Corky” Sarver; one brother, Danny Simmons; and one sister, Judy Sarver. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Steve Sarver and wife Alice Ann of Bluefield, Mark Sarver and wife Bridget of Bland, VA, Doug Sarver and wife Debbie of Bluefield, and Marianna Sarver of Bluefield; siblings, David Simmons of Princeton, Charlotte Hypes and husband Warren of Riner, VA, Chip Simmons and wife Georgeann of Bluefield, Larry Simmons and wife Ann of Bastian, VA, and Zerna Crouch of Reno, NV; seven grandchildren, Matthew Sarver of Bluefield, Beth Sarver of Atlanta, GA, Chad Brady and Sarah Brady, Ashleigh Beasley and husband Matt of Christiansburg, VA, Andy Sarver of Bland, VA, Grace Sarver of Bland, Douglas Sarver and wife Becca of Teca Cay, SC, and Kristen Goodwin and husband Josh of Stoney Point, NC; three great-grandchildren, Lucas and Savannah Beasley of Bland, VA and Stella Sarver of Teca Cay, SC. The family will receive friends at Mercer Funeral Home on Wednesday January 7, 2015 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral service will be conducted on Thursday January 8, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. from First Presbyterian Church in Bluefield with Dr. W.D. Hasty, Jr. officiating. Entombment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton where family members and friends will serve as pallbearers.
