John Stanley Stacy

John Stanley Stacy, of Bluefield, Virginia, 89, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2023, in Roanoke, VA. He was born on September 29, 1933, in Bluefield, West Virginia, to the late Charles Lewis and Helen Kelley Stacy. He was predeceased by many loved ones, including his beloved wife of 55 years, Patricia L. Stacy, one brother, Charles Lewis Stacy, Jr., one sister, Patricia Stacy McDermott, and an infant great granddaughter, Aubree Backus. John grew up in Bluefield, West Virginia, and attended Sacred Heart Catholic School as a child. He attended Greenbrier Military Academy in Lewisburg, West Virginia, but returned to Bluefield and graduated from Bluefield High School in 1952. John joined the Corps of Cadets at Virginia Tech and after many cabin parties and other good times with Dale Harmon and other Hokies, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1956. He had married Patricia Stacy in September of 1955, and she would take some credit for Dad graduating. As a member of the Corps, John began his military service immediately after graduation. He was stationed in Germany and Georgia and received an honorable discharge in 1958. He served in the Army Reserves for many years after he returned home. He returned to Bluefield and started his career as a salesman with Citizen’s Insurance Agency where he worked for 30 years, eventually becoming President. After Citizen’s was sold, he finished his career with Flat Top Insurance Agency, retiring in 1993. John was a longtime member of the Bluefield Rotary Club and University Club and served one term as President of the West Virginia Independent Insurance Agents. John’s greatest pleasure was his large family, but he also loved football, a hot sunny day, travelling and woodworking in his garage shop. John is survived by his large and loving family of seven children, Sarah Stacy Wall and her husband, Thomas, of Roanoke; Lucinda Stacy Backus of Winston-Salem, N.C.; Melinda Stacy Fanning and her husband, Ed, of Dandridge, TN; John Lewis Stacy and his wife, Cynthia, of Bluefield; Nancy Stacy Hodges of Roanoke; Margaret Stacy Osterhaus and her husband, Dave, of Roanoke; and Charles Andrew Stacy, and his wife, Melissa, of Bluefield; 17 grandchildren, Alex Wall, John Clayton Backus, Jordan Backus, Eddie Fanning, Patrick Fanning, Stacy Fanning Justice, John Stanley Stacy, II, Sarah Stacy Moriconi, Rachel Stacy, Ashleigh Hodges Kostopoulos, Ryan Hodges, Roland Macher, Lauren Macher Weber, Patrick Macher, Nickelas Stacy, Caroline Stacy, and Jackson Stacy; and 13 great grand-children, Eddie Fanning IV, Axel Fanning, Brody Justice, Corey Justice, Ines Moriconi, Christopher Moriconi, Aidan Hodges, Allison Hudson, Avery Hudson, and Kirstin Kostopoulos, Mason Hodges, Ryker Hodges, and Harvey Macher. Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends will also miss him. Many people helped us care for Dad in his later years. Ms. Jacenta Trigg provided home care in Bluefield for several years. The Harmony Memory Care Community provided care and support for Dad during his years in Roanoke. The family would also like to extend their heartfelt thanks to our caregivers from Legacy Hospice in Roanoke. Nicole, Amanda, Michelle, and Shay stepped in to help with Dad’s care and became a part of team Stacy. We are deeply grateful for your professionalism and compassion. The family will receive friends at Mercer Funeral Home in Bluefield, West Virginia from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Friday, April 21. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bluefield, West Virginia on Saturday, April 22 at 11:00 a.m. Internment will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Virginia.
