Fort Mill, SC- Garnet C. Barnes 83 passed away on Tuesday, September 16, 2008 at his home at 1401 Autumn Ridge Lane in Fort Mill, South Carolina, where he resided for the past three years moving there to be close to his family due to failing health. Before that time he had been a resident in Bluefield for fifteen years. He had also lived in Norfolk, Virginia, and Newhall, West Virginia. ???? Born September 24, 1924 in Valls Creek, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Bert and Lizzie Mitchell Barnes. He retired from the United States Navy as Chief Petty Officer after serving 26 years. He served in active duty in the South Pacific during World War II and the Vietnam War. He had occupations both before and after his Navy career. ???? In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife. Violet Reed Barnes and his second wife, Henrietta Linkous Fraley Barnes, brothers, Frank, Clyde, James Gene, Edward and Douglas and sisters, Gaynell Turner and Clara Ward. ???? Survivors include his wife Jean Austin Hudgins Barnes of Fort Mill, a daughter, Connie Barnes Cannon and her husband, Richard, a stepdaughter, Linda Rutherford of Tega Cay, South Carolina, grandson, Richard W. Cannon, Junior and his wife Donna, Granddaughter Amber Cannon Mathis and her husband Chad, great grandsons are Noah Cannon and Brandon Mathis all of Virginia Beach, Virginia, step grandchildren are Keith and Debbie Rutherford of Mission, TX, David and Kristy Rutherford of Tega Cay, SC, and Julie and Brent Cobb of Knoxville, TN, three step great grandsons and two step great granddaughters. ???? A visitation will be Friday September 19, 2008 from 12:00 - 2:00 p.m. at Mercer Funeral Home, Bluefield, WV.? Funeral services will follow at 2:00 P.M. in the Mercer Funeral Home Chapel and will be conducted by Rev. Ken Owens, Pastor of Edgemont Baptist Church where Mr. Barnes was a member prior to moving to South Carolina. He was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church in Fort Mill. Entombment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton, WV where military honors will be rendered by the West Virginia Honor Guard and members of the Mercer County Veterans Council. ?????
