Emma Ruth Stevens

Bluefield, WV – Emma Ruth Sargent Stevens went to Heaven on Monday March 23, 2015 at her home in Bluefield, WV. She was born on July 29, 1957 in Wise, VA and graduated from J. J. Kelly High School in Wise, VA. She attended Southwest Virginia Community College and graduated from Little French Beauty Academy where she studied cosmetology. Emma was Office Manager and Dental Assistant for her husband, Dr. Randy Stevens. She had also worked as a Legal Secretary for Judge John McGhee, and she was a certified Phlebotomist. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Leonard and Geneva Sargent of Big Stone Gap, VA. Emma leaves behind her loving husband of 29 years, Dr. Robert R. Stevens; two step-sons, Lt. Robert R. Stevens, Jr., US Navy, of San Diego, CA, and Camron Stevens and wife Pamela of Morgantown, WV; one granddaughter, Isabella; seven sisters and two brothers, Jerry Sargent of Wise, VA, Patricia Sloan of Duffield, VA, Lorna Eckard of Coleman Falls, VA, Peggy Anderson of Wise, VA, Sandra Tomko of Bedford, VA, Donna Akers of Richmond, VA, Jennifer Browning of Norton, VA, Leonard Sargent of Lexington, KY, and Sherry Cox of Big Stone Gap, VA; her best friend and chosen sister, Brenda Barlow; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends, too numerous to mention. Emma was active in the Bluefield Elks Lodge. She rescued countless animals and was a member of the Bluefield Humane Society. Emma’s smile, her kindness, and her love of family will never be forgotten. She will also be remembered for her fondness for flowers. She loved to garden and work in her flowerbeds. She also had a passion for the beach. The family will receive friends at Mercer Funeral Home on Thursday evening, March 26, 2015 from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday March 27, 2015 at 2:00 PM from the Mercer Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Larry Ramey officiating. Entombment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton where Jackie Barlow, Harry Kammer, Barry Perdue, Kermit Moore, Ken Kormendy, and David Westfall will serve as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request that memorial contributions, if desired, be made to the Elks National Fund or to the Mercer County Animal Shelter.
