Edith Taylor Wilkinson

Matthews, NC - Edith (Mae) Taylor Wilkinson passed away on June 16, 2017. She was born September 22, 1914 to Elbert Monroe and Laura Ashworth Taylor in West Point, Va. With her dad serving as a Mail Clerk on the N&W Railroad, the family was soon transferred to Norton, Va. When Edith was a teen, the family moved to Bluefield, Va., and finally settled in Bluefield, W.Va.-where she met and married Bernard Astor Wilkinson they were fortunate to be married 78years. Bernard and Edith spent his final 17 years of life in Colonial Heights, Va. near their daughter and son-in-law-Nancy and Jim McNeer and their family. When Bernard died (at age 100), Edith came "home" to be with her other daughter and son-in law Betty and Jack Bourne in Bluefield, Va. Edith was preceded in death by her parents, all her five siblings, and by her grandson-James Scott McNeer. She is survived by her two daughters and sons-.in-law, and by her grandchildren-Jody Bourne (wife Chrissy), David Bourne (wife Vicky) and Amanda McNeer, and by her great grandchildren; Jessica Bourne Morris(husband Scott), Hannah and Ben Bourne, , Morgan and Sloan Bourne, and Megan and Matthew McNeer; and by many nephews and nieces. Edith was a homemaker in the best tradition -which allowed her time to “always be there" for her family and for volunteer work. She was involved in helping with her church, the local hospital, her family’s activities, the Women’s Club and with the Lions Club Auxiliary In the later years assisted her husband in his Insurance Office, and she became a care giver for her mother and sister. In Colonial Heights, Va. she and Bernard sang with the Southernaires -entertaining in local civic clubs and nursing homes. Then it was her turn to be the one to receive care. (She was concerned that she had outlived her usefulness.); however, she did continued to enjoy life and to socialize- as she was taken out to eat, to the beauty parlor, and to many church activities. In the fall of 2016, Betty, Jack, and Edith moved to North Carolina to be near the grandsons and their families. The family want to thank the wonderful staff at Carrington Place, in Matthews, NC, for the loving care of Edith. Her family will cherish her beautiful needlework gifts, her delicious recipes and her modeling the importance of preserving strong family traditions. She wanted her family to look and to act in the best manner possible. Funeral services will be Tuesday June 20, 2017 at 2:00 PM at the Mercer Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Hugh Cole officiating. Burial will follow in the Monte Vista Park Cemetery in Green Valley. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 1:00 until the service hour.
