Clarice King Peters

Wytheville, VA- Clarice King Peters, of Carrington Place, Wytheville, VA, and formerly of Bluefield, WV, died Friday June 24, 2011. Born in Coalwood, WV, McDowell Country on April 3, 1916, she was a daughter of the late Mayo Mack and Grace Davis King of Bluefield and Draper, VA. Her family moved to Bluefield in 1926, and Mrs. Peters had been a resident until 2007 at which time she moved to Carrington Place in Wytheville. She was a member of First Christian Church for over 70 years and was active in various programs of the church. She was President of Christian Women’s Fellowship, was Circle Leader, and worked with the primary department for 17 years. Mrs. Peters was a graduate of Beaver High School and attended Bluefield College. For many years she was a partner in Peters and Driscoll Specialty Shop. After leaving the retail business, she worked with the exercise and morning swim programs at the YWCA. Later, she worked as an outreach worker with the Mercer County Commission on Aging. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James T. Peters; three sisters, Helen King Bivens, Stella King Byrd and Jean King Meredith; two nieces Barbara Bivens Coleman and Kimberly King; and two nephews, Timothy Meredith and Matthew King. Survivors include one sister, Lois K. Waddell and husband Bill of Roanoke, VA; two brothers, Mayo M. King, Jr. and wife Bess of Salem, VA and James J. King and wife Linda of Rural Retreat, VA; nieces, Beth Gann of Floyd, VA, Sue Bivens Simpson of Charleston, WV, Dreama King Lay of Salem, Claudia King Lamberscottie of Salem, Karen King Gladden of Salem, Betty Tabors of Ann Arbor, Mich., Cindy Waddell of Lorton, VA, and Mary Jones of Sullivans Island, SC; and nephews, Thomas Bivens of Winston Salem, NC, Richard Byrd of Riner, VA, Michael Byrd of Christiansburg, VA, Robert Meredith of Ovid, Mich, Charles W. Waddell of Williamsburg, VA, Jim Jon King of Rural Retreat and Randy King of Rural Retreat and; and several great nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday June 27, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. from the Mercer Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Aaron Watkins officiating. The family will receive friends at Mercer Funeral Home from 1:00 p.m. until the service hour. Burial will follow at Monte Vista Park Cemetery where nephews will serve as pallbearers.
