Betty Jean Lester

Mebane, NC – Ms. Betty J. Lester of The Hawfields Mebane NC formerly of Bluefield passed away Thursday January 15, 2015 at Presbyterian Home of the Hawfields in Mebane, NC after a brief illness. Born February 8, 1927 in Bluefield. Betty was the daughter of the Late Pauline (Alstead) & Homer B Morris. Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her beloved husband Robert J. Lester a very special sister Phyllis M. Carr and daughter- in-law Lisa Kiser Lester. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Bluefield and attended Front St. Christian in Burlington NC. Betty was a graduate of Beaver High School and McLain’s Business College, and was a well known bookkeeper in the Bluefield area and along with her mother they owned L&M Bookkeeping serving many businesses in the Bluefield area from the mid 1940’s until her mother’s death in 1980. As an avid bowler at Mountaineer Lanes Betty served the Women’s International Bowling Congress for many years as a league secretary and other capacities, she also was a member of The Ladies Auxiliary to The Brotherhood of Railroad and Trainmen local 754 serving as secretary and president through the years. Betty is survived by her children Raymond M. Lester and his wife Ginny of St Louis, Mo., Jerry W Lester and wife Pat of Dublin, Va, Barry J. Lester and wife Mary of Charleston, SC, Karen G. Priest and husband Gerry of Charleston, SC and Paul K Lester of Graham, NC. Betty was blessed with six grandchildren Bryan Lester of St Louis, Mo, Laura Jay and Jennifer Lester of Dublin, VA Alex and Gwen Lester of Charleston, SC and four Great Grandchildren Bryson and Dylan Lester of St Louis, Mo., Colby Farris and Cole Lester of Dublin, VA. A special sister in law Ms. Lillian Lester of Bluefield and dear friends Ms. Doris Wiley of Bluefield, VA and Edna Hicks of Mebane, NC and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday January 17, 2015 at 11:00 AM at the Mercer Funeral Home Chapel with the Pastor Doug Mc Daniels officiating. Burial will follow at the Monte Vista Park Cemetery in Green Valley. The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home from 10 AM until the service hour. Grandsons, Nephews and friends will serve as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers the family asks donations if desired be made to The Presbyterian Home 2502 S.
