Barbara Jean Caldwell

Barbara Lane Caldwell, a dedicated educator, loving mother, beloved grandmother, and child of God passed away peacefully on January 27, 2025, at the age of 86. Barbara was a woman who devoted her life to both her family and her passion for education, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire for years to come. Born on December 3rd, 1938, in Mullens, WV, Barbara was a natural scholar from an early age. Her love for learning was evident throughout her life, and she later attended Marshall University and graduated from Concord University with a degree in Elementary Education. She later obtained her social work license and continued to serve her community and those most in need. Barbara lived a life that was a testament to the transformative power of education, dedicating more than 40 years to shaping minds and hearts in the classroom. She was not just a teacher but a mentor and a friend to generations of students. Her influence stretched far beyond the walls of the classroom, as she remained in touch with many of her former students throughout her life. As a proud member of the Mullens High School Class of 1956, Barbara fostered connection and community. She was a cherished friend to many. She was the kind of person who made everyone feel welcome, who listened deeply, and who always had just the right piece of advice or a story to share. For those who knew her best, her strength and resilience were always evident. Barbara was a proud mother to two sons, Kevin and Christopher. She adored her granddaughters, Jana, Allison, and Kristen. She reveled in their achievements and cherished their company. Her life became even richer when her great-grandchildren arrived. Her infectious smile could light up any room when they were near. She delighted in watching them grow and learn, always eager to share her wisdom and love. Barbara was also a deeply devoted sister. She was a pillar of resilience, teaching her family the importance of perseverance, love, and unwavering hope. She is preceded in death by her parents, Erma and Oakley Lane, sons J. Kevin Caldwell and Christopher Caldwell, and brother Kenneth H. Lane. Barbara is survived by her loving siblings – James H. Lane, Betty Lane Pack, and Carol Lane Thom, her beloved granddaughters – Jana Caldwell-Morrison, Allison Osborne, and Kristen Caldwell, and by her cherished great grandchildren – Addison, Ethan, and Dylan Powers, Brentley, Elayna and Jozie Osborne, and Karson Morrison. Barbara’s legacy of faith, family, education, and strength will continue to live on. Her passing leaves a void in the hearts of all who knew her, but her memory will live on through the countless lives she touched, the lessons she imparted, and the love she so freely gave. A celebration of Barbara’’s life will be held on Saturday February 1, 2025 at Mercer Funeral Home in Bluefield, W.V. Visitation will begin at 2:00 pm with memorial service following at 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Southwest Virginia.
