Randolph Dennis Carter

February 20, 1948 - January 31, 2022

Randolph (Randy) Dennis Carter, 73, a recent resident of Long Beach, MS, formerly residing in Roanoke, VA, died Monday, January 31, 2022. Born February 20,1948 in Bluefield, WV, to the late Urban Dennis Carter, Jr. and Cassie Holbrook Carter. He graduated from Bluefield High School and West Virginia University. Randy retired from Norfolk Southern Corporation after working 37 years in the Coal Marketing division. He was a long-time member of Cave Spring United Methodist Church in Roanoke, VA. Randy was an avid golfer, enjoyed watching sports such as golf and football. He enjoyed time with his family, especially in Myrtle Beach, SC where he spent time after retirement swimming, golfing, and being “Paw Paw.” You would often see Randy in a t-shirt, shorts, and Crocs as his “after work” and “retirement” attire. Randy is survived by his wife of 42 years, Sara Mehaffey Carter, his three children Melissa Carter Toth (John Dauber), of Strongsville, OH, Emily Carter Kolenda (Joshua Kolenda), of Long Beach, MS, and Edgar R. Carter (Lindsay Carter), of South Fayette, PA, his sister, Debbie Carter Smith (Kit Smith III) of Daphne, AL, and seven (7) grandchildren: Brandon Toth, Jameson Dauber, Madison Kolenda, Reagan Kolenda, Harper Carter, Hadley Carter, and Haisley Carter. He is also survived by multiple nieces, nephews, and cousins. Funeral services will be Thursday, February 10, 2022 at 1:00 PM at Mercer Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Brent Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Monte Vista Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends for a visitation time at the funeral home from 12:00 – 1:00PM. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial donation be made to: Cave Spring United Methodist Church for their Organ Fund.
