Walter "Pops" Stamper

Bluefield, WV- Walter D. “Pops” Stamper, 77, of Route 2, Bluefield, WV, passed away with his family by his side on Thursday March 11, 2010 at a Princeton hospital. Born July 4, 1932 in Mercer County, WV, he was a son of the late Walter H. Stamper and Charlotte Virginia Short Stamper. Mr. Stamper was a veteran of the U.S. Army having served his country for 13 years. He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene, and he loved his church. He had worked as a coal miner and also worked for Jim Hamm Splice and Repair. Mr. Stamper liked to collect guns and loved to hunt. He was a fan of NASCAR and enjoyed watching Westerns. He never met a stranger, was kind to everyone all of the time, and was known to make a great pot of coffee. He was a loving Papa to his grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Roger K. Stamper and Curtis Clyde Stamper; granddaughter Jamie Taylor. Survivors include his loving wife of 32 years, Maxine Jones Stamper of the home; five children, Donna Marie Gearheart and her husband Barry of North Carolina, Kathy Mathena and husband Preston of Bluefield, VA, Sharon Borich and her husband Jerry of Florida, Lynne Taylor and her husband Teddy of Bluefield, WV and Walter D. Stamper, Jr. and his wife Sue of Bluefield, WV; two sisters, Linda Glass of Bluefield, WV and Patsy Hensley and her husband Johnny of Bluefield, WV; nine grandchildren 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at First Church of the Nazarene (Stadium Drive), Bluefield on Sunday evening March 14, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday March 15, 2010 at 3:30 p.m. from First Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Harold Massey officiating. Entombment will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton where George Snitzel, Jr., Bill Dove, Denny Ferguson and members of First Church of the Nazarene will serve as pallbearers. Military graveside rites will be performed by the Mercer County Veteran’s Council and the West Virginia Honor Guard.
