Dr. Surrinder K. Chopra, M.D.

Bluefield, VA- Dr. Surrinder K. Chopra, M.D. age 82 prominent area plastic and reconstructive surgeon specializing in hand surgery of Bluefield, VA passed away on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, VA with his loving wife of 50 years and his son by his side. Born August 30, 1934 in India, he was a son of the late Shri Harbans Lal Chopra and Mrs. Indira Rani Chopra. He completed his early education in India and graduated from Amritsar Medical College. He immigrated to England in 1960 where he became a Board Certified Plastic and Reconstructive & Orthopedic Surgeon. He was a certified fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Scotland. Dr. and Dr. (Mrs.) Chopra settled in Bluefield, VA in 1973 where he was recruited by the Bluefield Sanitarium and later became a partner. After a few years of working in Bluefield, Dr. Chopra furthered his training at Tulane University in New Orleans, LA. He was Board Certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Dr. Chopra was a member of American Medical Association, the American Burn Association, Mercer County Medical Association, Virginia Medical Society, West Virginia Medical Society and Virginia Society of Plastic Surgeons. He served a term as chief of surgery at Bluefield Regional Medical Center and was a past president of the Mercer County Medical Association. Dr. Chopra retired from his private practice in December 2005. In addition to his career in medicine, Dr. Chopra was a successful real estate developer in the area. His projects included developing Westwood Commons, College Square Shopping Center and College Crossing Shopping Center. He served on the Town of Bluefield Planning Commission for multiple terms. Dr. Chopra had countless hobbies such as being an avid golfer, painter, photographer and collector of antiques. He was an active Member of Fincastle Country Club for over 30 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Madhu Chopra, brothers Dr. Tilak Raj Chopra, Mr. V.N. Chopra and sister, Mrs. Kanta Chopra. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Kamlesh Chopra and son, Raj Chopra. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, April 17, 2017 at Mercer Funeral Home where funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. He loved Bluefield and running into his patients, neighbors and friends, and being greeted with love and gratitude wherever he went.
