Shelby L. Smalls

Shelby L. Smalls, 60, of Bluefield, WV gained her wings after losing an 8 year battle with cancer on Tuesday November 7, 2023. Shelby was born on August 4, 1963 to the late Clarence and Dorothy Martin of Bluefield. Shelby was preceded in death by her husband William George Smalls Jr., sisters Audrey Mitchell, Patrictia Shaw, Dora Martin Coleman, brothers Charles Ross and Robert Samuel Martin, & great nephew Jaydon Brown. A graduate of Bluefield High School, Shelby worked tirelessly for the City of Bluefield and The Greater Mt. Zion Pentecostal Church for many years and was able to touch the lives of so many throughout that time. Shelby will be sorely missed by her family and friends. Those left to cherish her memory are her two amazing sons that allowed their mom to want for nothing, William Smalls “III” (Danica) and Michael Smalls both of Raleigh, NC. Siblings Linda (Bruce) Brown, Bluefield, WV Mary Martin-Franklin, Lexington, KY Amos Ross, Bluefield, WV Peggy Hudson, Bluefield, WV, Charles Williams, Bluefield, WV, Pernie (Kenneth) Brown, Havaco, Beverly Martin-Crenshaw and Leslie Martin both of Bluefield. She had one grand daughter that she absolutely adored, who she affectionately referred to as “the ticket” and facetimed with regularly, Reagan Smalls of Raleigh, NC. God also blessed Shelby with a wealth of nieces and nephews who are also left to cherish her memory, each of which she loved dearly. The only solace is that she is free of pain and no longer suffering. Shelby was not afraid of death as she accepted the Lord as a young child and she still made it a priority to read her bible daily. The family would like to extend thanks to all that checked on Shelby through text, phone calls, stopped by for visits, or sent cards. Your generosity is truly appreciated and each of you holds a special place in our hearts. A memorial service will be held privately by family members and close friends on Monday November 13, 2023. Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Bluefield, Virginia where nephews will serve as pallbearers.
