Sharon Kay Leffel

Bluefield, WV- Sharon Kay Leffel, of Bluefield, WV passed away peacefully on Sunday September 21, 2014, after a very short illness with cancer. Sharon, born August 18, 1949 served the City of Bluefield for thirty eight years; she always had an upbeat personality and was known for being happy. Sharon ran the Bluefield Flea Market for many years and continued part-time at the City Garage after retirement. She loved “the mens,” as she endearingly referred to them, and built lasting friendships with the guys at the garage. In addition to her career, Sharon had a passion for helping those in need. She had a lasting love for animals and was always willing to help a furry friend. She held a special relationship with all of her nieces and nephews, playing an integral role in each of their lives. She generously spent much of her time as a special friend and care giver to Ida Lee Hawkins in the years preceding Ida’s death. Sharon always enjoyed gardening, going to yard sales, and cooking for her friends & family. She was a member of the Immanuel Luthern Church in Bluefield. Sharon was preceded in death by: both parents, William Benton Leffel and Mary Louise Fowler Leffel; paternal grandparents, S.E. Leffel and Dorothy Leffel; maternal grandparents, Cleveland Saunders Fowler and Martha Sue Fowler. Sharon is survived by: sister and best friend Rhonda Hawkins and husband Eric of Bluefield; brother Doug Leffel and wife Anne of Vinton, Va; sister in law Loretta Carrigan of Bluefield; nephews, Ryan O’Connor Hawkins and companion Melissa Harvey and children of Ghent, WV, Joshua Benton Hawkins and wife Stephanie of Greensboro, NC, and Justin Grey Hawkins of Bluefield; nieces, Kathy Leffel Goetz and husband Russ of Burlington, and Maggie T. Williford and husband Brad of Holly Springs, NC; great nieces and nephews, Ashley and Joey Neve, Caroline and Kyle Williford, and her namesake, Raylan Kay Hawkins due in December. In addition to her family, Sharon is survived by many special friends, including Dallas Fowler and cousin Betty Jo Zapparosky. In lieu of flowers, Sharon would have appreciated monetary, time, or supply donations made to the Mercer County Animal Shelter, Pet Haven, or Mercer County Spay Association. Services will be held at Mercer Funeral Home on Wednesday, September 24 with family receiving friends at 5:00pm followed by a memorial service at 7:30pm. Private burial will be held for family with nephews and great-nephews serving as pallbearers.
