Samuel Martin

Bluefield, WV - Samuel Kermit Martin 95 of 1920 College Avenue Bluefield, WV died Monday April 6, 2009 at a Princeton hospital following a short illness. A native of Roanoke, VA he was born February 16, 1914, a son of the late Abram P. Martin and Julieann Grisso Martin. He was a retired district manager after 38 years of service with the Kroger Company, and lived in Bluefield since 1960. A loving husband of 68 years, he was a dedicated father and loyal friend. A man with a kind heart, a truly giving person and servant of God, he gave his best in all he did. He was an active member of First Baptist Church of Bluefield, where he served as a Deacon of the Church, a counter, formerly served on the property and finance committees, and he and his late wife Beverly volunteered in the nursery. Mr. Martin was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, was a wood worker and carpenter and loved Smith Mountain Lake. He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Beverly M. Martin, who died in February, sisters Mae Garland, Kate Wilson, Thalia Blackwell, Nell Cummins, Glenna Hubbard, Lucille Muller, and brothers Bill and Mack Martin. He is survived by a daughter Mary Lynne Martin Woro of Ashville, NC and a son Alan Martin and his wife Karen of Charlotte, NC, a brother B. Kent Martin of Roanoke, VA, grandchildren Mary Davis Wallace, Sarasota, FL, Sarah Kate Martin, Seth Martin and Jordan Martin all of Charlotte, NC and goddaughters Karen Thurmer of Bluefield, WV and Melissa Kirk Oliverio of Morgantown, WV and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday April 9, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church with Rev. Ed Fisher officiating. Interment will be at 3:00 p.m. at the Fair View Cemetery in Salem, VA. Pallbearers will be Seth Martin, Jordan Martin, Gene Thurmer, Charlie Paschal, David Armbrister, Abel Solademi, Don White, and Don Rice.
