R.W. Brown

Bluefield, WV- R.W. “Smokey” Brown, 64, of Bluefield, WV, passed away peacefully at his residence on Friday October 28, 2011. He was a graduate of Bluefield High School and Bluefield State College where he was a member of the basketball team. He was also a U.S. Army veteran. He was a former manager with Gay & Taylor Insurance Adjusting Co. Later he diligently built his own successful adjusting and appraising business, Brown & Associates. He was very well respected in the adjusting industry and truly enjoyed working claims, having worked his last one late Thursday evening. He enjoyed spending time with his family, working at his camp, joking with his friends, and the companionship of his loyal canine. He will be missed by many friends and family. He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph W. Brown. Smokey is survived by his wife, Karen; two sons, Dr. Rod Brown and wife Cyndi, and Brian Brown and wife Michele; three grandchildren, Lauren, Will, and Caroline, all of Greensboro, NC. He is also survived by his mother, Theda Brown; sisters, Iris Lowman, and Theresa Baria and husband Quent. Also surviving are his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Merle and Rick Harman; special buddy, Parker; and several nieces and nephews. Smokey was raised with Christian values and never forgot to give thanks for his many blessings and to ask for the Lord’s guidance in all his decisions. He was generous and was willing to help others. The family will receive friends at Mercer Funeral Home on Sunday, October 30, 2011 from 4:00 ??" 7:00 p.m. A funeral service will follow at 7:00 p.m. from the Mercer Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Danny Scott officiating. A graveside service will be held on Monday, October 31, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. from the mausoleum chapel at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell. Serving as pallbearers will be Dr. Steve Bourne, Mike Spradlin, Joe Simon, Lou Ercoline, Bill Hageman, Mac Hatfield and Tom Grim. Military graveside rites will be rendered by the Mercer County Veteran’s Council and the West Virginia Honor Guard.
