Robert "Peanut" Shelley

Bluefield, VA- Robert Paul Shelley (Peanut) passed away peacefully with his loving family after a brave fight. With humble beginnings, born at home in a log cabin prematurely at 3 pounds and also German measles they named him "Peanut" being that he was no bigger than a peanut, a natural born fighter. A mighty man was he, loving Jesus Christ, his family, church, and a proud American. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Chapel in Tazewell Virginia, a retired coal miner of US Steel #51, and he served his country in Korea. He rode motorcycles, enjoyed the outdoors, and fishing. He taught his nephews how to hunt, it was passed down to generations. He loved gardening and could not wait for his tomatoes to arrive. Peanut prided himself on being kind, generous, and making everyone feel welcome. He loved to visit and keep busy coming to anyone's aid who needed anything. A true friend, his heart always led him and he had never met a stranger. His friends, children, grandchildren, and family adored him completely. A servant's heart and strong soldier, the battle was won and completed for his eternal home, he will truly be missed by all. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 50 years Joyce Shelley, son Paul and wife Rosa Shelley, daughter Lisa and husband Scott Grimm, daughter Jill and husband Rodney Cox, brothers Jess and wife Carolyyn Shelley, Bobby and wife Oleta Shelley, sister Linda and husband Pete walker, grandchildren Brooke Colosi, Hali Colosi, and Trenton Grimm, great-grandson Xander Colosi, nieces Sarah Shelley Dorton, Madelyn and husband/family friend Arnette Cunningham, Lindsey Hylwa, Eddie and husband Howard Cox, Sandy and husband David Holton, Cheryl and husband Randy Brodnik, Denise Carroll, Patty Chestnut, Deanna Young Duran, nephews Tommy and David Walker, David and wife Lisa Shelley, Eric and wife Christie Nunley, John and wife Michelle Nunley, Jason and wife Heather Nunley, Keith Hylwa. Special friends of 50 years include Jane and Tommy Richardson, Jean and Sonny Harrold, and Vi Levitt. A celebration of his life will be held at Mercer Funeral home in Bluefield, WV on Wednesday, July 27th. Visitation will be at 6:00 pm and service will start at 7:00 pm. Pastor Chuck Trent will be officiating and Eric Nunley will be over the eulogy. In lieu of flowers, we ask you to plant tomatoes and enjoy them or share with neighbors.
