Rhea Katherine Koontz Duvall

Chapel Hill, NC- Rhea Katherine Koontz Duvall, resident of Bluefield for more than 50 years, died Tuesday, January 19, 2016 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, where she has lived for the past two years with her daughter, Margy Duvall McFarling and her son-in-law Rod McFarling. Born September 8, 1925 in Rockford, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Charles Dale Koontz and Hila Mildred Figley Koontz. She was devoted to her family and her church. At Westminster Presbyterian, in 1984, she received her Honorary Life Membership to the Women of the Church, Presbyterian Church U.S.A. At First Presbyterian, she served as Pastoral Assistant to Lynn Temple Jones from 1985 to 1986 and later managed the kitchen there. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Robert W. “Bob” Duvall; two brothers, Homer and Lawrence Koontz; and a sister, Martha Koontz Archer. Survivors include her children, Roger W. Duvall and his wife Susan of Atlanta, Georgia, Margy Duvall McFarling and her husband Rod of Chapel Hill, N.C., David J. Duvall and his wife Lora of Morristown, Tenn., Joel R. Duvall of Carrboro, N.C., and Roberta Farmer, who was like a daughter to her and Roberta's husband Donald Farmer of Charleston; grandchildren, Allie McFarling of Chapel Hill, Ashley McFarling Schmitz and her husband Brian of Chicago, Illinois, Mary Elizabeth Duvall of San Diego, California, Matthew D. Duvall and his wife Brie Alter Duvall of Richardson, Texas, Robert W. Duvall of Greensboro, N.C., Dylan N. Duvall of Morristown; 4 great-grandchildren; and two nephews, Jerry and Brice Bovenizer, both of Bluefield. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church at 2:00, following the reception, with Kellan Sarles officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday, January 30, at First Presbyterian Church from 1:30 until the service hour. A private family burial will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Park.
