Reed Ewing

Bluefield WV- Reed Taylor Ewing 84, of 501 Woodland Drive Bluefield, WV passed away December 11, 2008 at his home. Born March 1, 1924 in Salt Lake City, UT he was the son of the late Russell and Jane Taylor Ewing. Mr. Ewing lived in Salt Lake City , UT until he answered the call of his country in 1943 as a aviation cadet. During WW II he completed 24 combat missions over Germany as a bombardier and navigator with the 344th Bomb Group based in England, France, and Belgium. After the war he was with the Army of Occupation in Germany until being discharged with the rank of First Lieutenant in 1946.Mr. Ewing went on to serve his country in the U.S. Air Force retiring as a Major. Mr. Ewing attended the University of Utah from the fall of 1946 until the spring of 1952. He received a B.S. Degree in Psychology and a graduate certificate in Social work and a Masters in degree in Social Work with Psychiatric Specialization. Mr. was employed at the VA Hospital in Ft. Meade, S.D., the Utah State Hospital in Provo, UT, as Psychiatric Social Worker, St. Albans, and retiring from Bluefield Mental Health as a Psychiatric Social Worker. Mr. Ewing also attended the First Christian Church of Bluefield. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his first wife; Geraldine Larson in 1953, two grandchildren; Stephanie D. Ewing and Wesley Hood, and a brother; Jack Ewing. Survivors include; his wife; Mary E. Ewing of the home; his children; Suzie Phipps and husband James of High Point, NC, John Reed and wife Jean Ewing of Bluefield, WV, Peggy Green of Roanoke, VA, Paul and wife Debbie Ewing, of Blacksburg, VA, Jane and husband Ron Hood of Lynchburg, VA six grandchildren; Bradley and Jason Ewing of Blacksburg, VA, Becky DeMary of Salisbury, NC, Christopher Hood New York City, NY , Rachel Hood of Lynchburg, VA, Mary Murphy of Fresno, CA, and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Mr. Ewing will be conducted form the Mercer Funeral Home Chapel Saturday December 13, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. with the Dr. Allen A. Hammond and Rev. Erin Watkins officiating. Burial will follow at the Roselawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery located Princeton, WV with military graveside rites preformed by the Mercer County Veterans Council . Serving the Family as Pall bearers will be Bradley Ewing, Jason Ewing, Jason Hood, Christopher Hood, Sam DeMary, and Thomas Smith. Friends may call at the funeral home Saturday one hour prior to services.
