Onita Mae Shumate

Bluefield, WV- Onita Mae Irvin Shumate of Bluefied, WV, died Saturday November 5, 2016 at Providence Park Hospital, Novi, MI. Born November 13, 1929 in Bluefield, WV, she was the daughter of the late William Columbus Irvin and Ona Mae Ratliff Irvin. Onita was a charter member of Edgemont Baptist Church, the church she loved dearly; a place where she faithfully served the Lord and her church family. Onita retired from JC Penney Co., a place where she was faithful in her role as Personnel Manager. Onita loved her family and friends; she devoted her life to seeking out their love and companionship. In addition to her parents, Onita was preceded in death by her husband Ralph Warden Shumate and a daughter Linda Joy Shumate. Survivors include her daughter, Sharon Shumate Borror and husband David Borror of Farmington Hills, MI. Onita had been living with Sharon and David in MI where she became involved at Highland Park Baptist Church in Southfield, MI. There she attended various Bible Studies and Worship Services. Onita had two grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Nicole Borror Loucks and husband Ryan Loucks and their children: Taylor, Brielle and Kendall; Alec David Borror and wife Katie and their son Thomas Ralph, named after his great-grandfather. Onita has three surviving siblings: Patty Irvin Shumate and her husband Kenneth Shumate of Bluefield, Donald Irvin and his wife Mary Irvin of Bluefield, and Tommy Irvin and his wife Velda Irvin of Mt. Airy, NC. The family will receive friends at Mercer Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 15, 2016 from 1:00-2:00pm. The service will follow at 2:00pm at the Funeral Home with Pastor Hugh Cole of Edgemont Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton where Alec Borror, grandson, Ryan Loucks, son-in-law, and members of Edgemont Baptist Church will serve as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Edgemont Baptist Church, 2507 Jefferson Drive, Bluefield, WV 24701.
