Oliver Lee "Ollie" Law

Bluefield, WV- Oliver Lee "Ollie" Law, 89, of Bluefield, WV, went to be with his Lord and Savior, on Tuesday, January 16, 2018. He was at home with family. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, the youngest of 7 siblings, born to the late Charles T. and Hattie Mae Foster Law, on November 16, 1928. He was preceded in death by his parents, by daughter Karen Faye Law Wyatt, brothers Emmett, Charles, and James "Jimmie" Law, and by sisters Alice Travis, Ruth Bertok, and Geneva MacDerment. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 67 years, Sue Law (Elizabeth Susan Martin), by son David Martin Law of Cleveland, TN; daughter Amy Lee Law of Bluefield, WV; son John Charles Law (Jody) of Warsaw, Poland; granddaughters Davina (Jason) Marraccini of Roswell, GA, and Mallory Ann Law of Marietta, GA; great grandchildren Zara and Roman Marraccini of Roswell, GA, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. One of his favorite writings is attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson about the definition of success. "To laugh often and love much; to win the respect of intelligent persons and the affection of children; to earn the approbation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty. To find the best in others; to give one's self; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to have played and laughed with enthusiasm and sung with exaltation; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived-this is to have succeeded." Ollie felt that these basic principles enabled him to thoroughly enjoy his life to the utmost. Ollie graduated from Beaver High School in 1947, then enlisted in the US Army. In 1949, after his honorable discharge from the Army, he attended Emory and Henry College. He was on the 1949 football team that played in the Burley Bowl and the original Tangerine Bowl. After college, Ollie went to work at Bluefield Supply Company, where he met his future wife, Sue. In 1953, Ollie went to work for the United States Post Office Department. He retired in 1984 as a letter carrier. He always felt that this was the job that the Lord wanted him to have, because it gave him many opportunities to witness and speak of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Ollie loved Bluefield, the Bluefield Beavers, baseball at Bowen Field, and the West Virginia Mountaineers. If you were passing through Bluefield, and you spoke with Ollie, he would make sure you knew all the things this community had to offer. If you didn't know anything about Bluefield before you spoke with him, you sure knew everything about it after your conversation with Ollie. He was so proud of this area, its people, and its history. Ollie also felt it was important to be a part of your community, and to contribute wherever you could. He served on the boards for the City of Bluefield Board of Directors, East River Chapter of the American Red Cross, and the Bluefield YMCA. He was past President/board member for: the Greater Bluefield Federal Employee Credit Union, the Golden Age Club, the Bluefield Lions Clubs, and was a member of the Bluefield Elks B.P.O.E. Lodge 269. He volunteered for the Cub Scout Troop, the American Cancer Society, and the Literacy Volunteers of America. He helped in the construction of the Yakkity Yak playground and a Habitat for Humanity house. He coached boys basketball in the Bluefield City Recreational League, boy's high school basketball and men's softball in the Bluefield Church League. Ollie was encouraged by his wife Sue to join the Senior Bowling League at the age of 70. He was a member of only two churches throughout his entire lifetime, First Baptist Church and Edgemont in Bluefield. He taught Sunday School, was a Deacon, and sang in the choir for almost 20 years. He bowled until about 3 weeks ago, when he hung up his bowling shoes for the last time. The family will receive friends at Mercer Funeral Home on Friday evening, January 19, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. A memorial service will be conducted on Saturday January 20, 2018 from the Mercer Funeral Home Chapel at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Ed Fisher officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton.
