Mary Ellen McCue

Bluefield, WV- Mary Ellen Gilliss McCue, 91, died Sunday May 17, 2015, in Raleigh, NC. She was born on May 5, 1924 in Norfolk, VA, the only child of Joseph R. Gilliss, Jr. and Lucile Hoffman Gilliss. Mary Ellen graduated from Maury High School in Norfolk, VA and attended Madison College in Harrisonburg, VA. On May 25, 1945, Mary Ellen married Ralph W. McCue in Norfolk, VA. They returned to Bluefield in 1953 and were welcomed by a large and loving McCue family. Mary Ellen was a life-long, faithful member of Christ Episcopal Church. She taught in the nursery school and was a member of the Altar Guild for nearly 50 years. She enjoyed bridge, knitting, reading and spending time with her family and friends. She was an avid gardener of flowers and vegetables, and once won the “yard of the month” award from the Bluefield Garden Club! Mary Ellen was preceded in death by her parents and her loving husband, Ralph W. McCue. She is survived and will be greatly missed by her children: Lynn (Russ) Burney, R. William, Jr. (Lorraine) McCue, Lucy (Don) Dancer, and Laurel (David) Payne; her grandchildren: Helen Burney (Greg) Williams, Jean Ellen McCue, Anne McCue, Christian (Holly) Dancer, Dana Dancer (Bryan) Jacobs, Clarkson Payne and Keaton Payne; her 3 great- grandchildren: Mitchell Williams, Claire Williams, and Caroline Jacobs. She is survived by her brother-in law, Don Kersey, Sr., her niece Anne Pearce DeAngelo, and nephews Rick Pearce, Donald Kersey, Jr., and David Kersey. Visitation will be Thursday, May 21, 2015 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Mercer Funeral Home on Cumberland Road in Bluefield, WV. The funeral service will be held on Friday, May 22, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at Christ Episcopal Church. The Reverend Chad Slater will officiate. Burial will be at Monte Vista Park Cemetery following the service. Pallbearers will be: Christian Dancer, Clarkson Payne, Keaton Payne, Mitchell Williams, Greg Williams, Bryan Jacobs, Russ Burney, Don Dancer and David Payne.
