Lucille "Gagi" Vass

Galena, OH - Lucille A. Vass, age 68 of Galena, formerly of Bluefield, W.Va., joined our Lord this Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at Riverside Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Lucille was born on February 11, 1943 in Welch, WV to the late Floyd B. and Ida J. (Dove) Vermillion. A graduate of Bluefield High School in 1961 with honors, she earned a degree in education from Concord University, and a master's degree in human development from the University of Maryland College Park. Forever the educator, Lucille taught for 33 years for the Prince George's County School System in Maryland, where she had resided for 40 years. A woman of deep faith, she was an active member of Cresthill Baptist Church in Maryland and Genoa Baptist Church in Ohio. Lucille's creativity was evident in all she did. She was a people person who enjoyed entertaining and gladly opened her home to all. Always the kind and generous one, Lucille adored her family and friends. "Gagi," as they called her, never hesitated to donate her time to listen and would aid anyone and everyone in any way she could. Her life was spent devoted to her family and friends, with whom she treasured time spent traveling or at the beach. She was an avid reader, with a constant quest for knowledge to broaden her intellect. If one didn't know the answer, they could count on Lucille to know it. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother Hobert (Jenkie) Gundell. She was a dedicated mother, grandmother, and a wonderful sister. She will forever be cherished by daughters: Cheryl "Cheri" (Jim) Burnett of Sunbury, OH, Elizabeth "Beth" (Mark) Shires of Galena, OH, grandchildren: Anthony Shires, Natalie Leber, Kelsey Shires, Nolan Leber, great-grandson: Parker Dean Shires, sister: Nancy (John) Rush of Bluefield, WV, brother: Floyd B. (Shela) Vermillion of Myrtle Beach, SC, sister-in-law: Sylvia Gundell of Bluefield, WV, nieces, and nephews. She will be remembered for her abiding faith, strong will, and forgiving heart. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday August 27, 2011 at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, at the corner of Washington and Albemarle Streets in Bluefield, WV, with Genoa Baptist Church Pastor Frank Carl officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the services. Private inurnment will take place at in the Monte Vista Cemetery in Bluefield, WV.
