Joan E. Adkins

Joan E. Adkins, of Bluefield VA, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, January 29, 2023 at her home, surrounded by her family. Born December 13, 1948 in Paw Paw KY, she was the daughter of the late Hollie Scarberry and Grace Pruitt Scarberry. Mrs. Adkins had lived most of her lifetime in Bluefield and she attended Brushfork Baptist Church. She worked many years at Comcast as a Dispatcher and retired from First Community Bank in 2017. One of Joan's biggest legacies was her faith, which she instilled in her family. She not only taught them about faith, she lived by example. Joan raised her children in a home where they never doubted that love existed and then passed that same love on to her grandchildren. She built her life around her family and enjoyed cooking meals and bringing everyone together around the table. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Thomas Adkins; her siblings, Hufford, Eugene, Hubbert, Douglas, Sarah, Lige and Clifford; and grandson, Kevin Carver. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Tammy Young and husband, Eddie of Fayetteville, WV; Heather Call and husband, Kevin of Bluefield WV; grandchildren, Jason Young and wife, Amanda; Savannah Robertson and husband, Travis; Dylan Young and wife, Amanda; Mason Young; Jordan Call and Emily Carver; great-grandchildren, Jax Young, Ellie Young, Caroline Carver, Kevin Carver Jr., Tyler Lawson Jr., Wyatt Robertson and Ramona Robertson; special family member, Karl Grove and his wife, Louise; as well as a host of nieces and nephews. The family was blessed to have a very special person who not only took care of Joan, but loved her and became a part of their family, her caregiver, Stephanie Kinder McDonald. In her final weeks, she was blessed to have MSA Hospice Nurse, Courtney Ray, who faithfully supported Joan and the family with love and compassion. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, February 1, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at the Mercer Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Jim Mitchell officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from noon until the service hour. Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Blufield, VA where family members will serve as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bluefield Union Mission, 2203 Bluefield Avenue, Bluefield, WV 24701 or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
