Ida Lee Hawkins

Ida Lee Hawkins 93, of Bluefield peacefullycompleted her life on earth and began her new life in heaven on March 7, 2014. Born October 8, 1920 in Bluefield she was the daughter of the late Walter G. Kidd and Pearl Mae Kidd. She was preceded in death by husbandRalph O. Hawkins following 52 years of marriage. In addition, she was preceded in death by brotherWalter G Kidd II of Portland Oregon, and sisterNorma Jean Kidd of Bluefield. Those left to cherish her memory include her son Eric O. Hawkins, his wife Rhonda F. Hawkins, with whom she made her home in her last years, and three very special grandchildren Ryan O. Hawkins, Joshua B. Hawkins and Justin G. Hawkins, as well as Stephanie Green Hawkins, wife of Joshua Hawkins and Melissa Harvey and children, companion of Ryan Hawkins. Otherfriends who remained close to her throughout her life, lending emotional support included SharonLeffel, Neta Cole, Karen Basham and Dwight Neal. She lived her life with faith in God and followed the scriptures to serve as her husband's help mate. She dedicated her life to compassionately caring for her family. Her hobbies included sewing, baking and painting,and in her later years enjoyed reading, especiallychristian novels and her bible. She joyfully helped in caring for her grandsons during their early years. Each of them held a special memory for her and these memories will serve as a source of comfort to them now. She had a fun story that she loved to share about her first grandchild Ryan and his love of strawberries. Josh was the witty one, who sought the comfort of his grandparents when Hurricane Hugo hit Bluefield. Sharing their love for sweets, she called Justin her "ice cream boy",for he always made sure she had her “cone of cream” for the day. Her love of cooking togetherand sharing special recipes lead Stephanie to develop a close personal bond. Even in her advanced age, she enjoyed her time with friends. Sharon Leffel not only assisted with her care, but provided her with outings, excursions and visits to brighten her day. NetaCole called her daily and read scripture to her after she could no longer see to read her bible, and provided phone calls to cheer her. Both of these women were special to her and will be remembered for their love. Visitation will be held at Mercer Funeral Homeon Monday, March 10, 2014 from 5 to 7p.m., witha Memorial Service starting at 7p.m. with Rev Dave Neal officiating. Pallbearers will be Ryan Hawkins, Joshua Hawkins, Justin Hawkins, Wayne Green, Dwight Neal and Joe Simons.
