Helen Jarrett

Bluefield, WV- Helen Davis Jarrett, 94, of Bluefield, was welcomed home by the Lord on April 8, 2013. At last, she is reunited with the greatest loves of her life, her husband, Edward Bernard Jarrett, and her son, Edward Bernard Jarrett, Jr. Helen was born October 14, 1918 in a Bland County farmhouse to Thomas Millard Davis and Ada Lee Stimson. A devoted Christian, she was a lifelong member of Bland Street Methodist Church, attending many church functions each week until she was slowed by her health. In 1944, Helen married Bernard, owner of Southern Office Supply. When the war in the Pacific called him for duty, Helen took over the growing company until his return. After her husband’s death in 1953, Helen assumed the reins for good and many in Bluefield would come to Southern Office Supply to visit with her in the store’s gift shop. For the time, Helen was unique as a business owner and single mother. She took great pride in her work and cherished her son, Eddie. Shortly after his death in 1996, Helen decided it was time to retire and closed the doors of Southern Office Supply and Southern Printing Corporation after 60 years of service to the community. A voracious reader, Helen was able to share her passion with friends in the McGuffey Book Club after retiring. In addition to her parents, husband and son, she was preceded in death by her three sisters, Mary Lee Davis, Nellie French, and Emma Mullin; two brothers, Carl and Orrin Davis; and grandson, Chandler Davis Jarrett. She is survived by her best friend and sister-in-law Norma Davis; her grandchildren, Ted and Meredith Jarrett, Christopher and Sandy Garrett, and Edward and Dianne Garrett; her daughters-in-law Brenda Wartman and Jeanette Jarrett; great grandchildren, Caitlin, David, Matt, and Courtney; as well as many cousins, nephews and nieces. Friends are invited to visit with the family at 10:00 AM on Saturday, April 13 at Mercer Funeral Home, followed by short service in the chapel at 11:00. A short graveside service for the family will be held at Monte Vista Cemetery at Noon.
