Gregory Wayne Wood

Gregory Wayne Wood, age 57, of Bluefield, Virginia, passed away on August 5, 2026, leaving behind a family who loved him beyond words and a lifetime of memories that will forever keep him close. Gregory was one of those people who loved deeply and lived fully. Family was at the center of his world, and there was nothing more important to him than the people he loved. He was a devoted son, brother, father, grandfather, family member, and friend, but to those who knew him best, he was so much more. He was a familiar voice, a source of laughter, a constant presence, and a big part of the heart that held his family together. Gregory was also a storyteller. He loved sharing a good story, and those who knew him will remember the stories he told, the way he told them, and the laughter and memories that came along with them. His stories were part of who he was, and now they become part of the legacy he leaves behind. His family and friends will continue to tell his stories, share their own stories about him, and keep his memory alive for generations to come. And then there were his grandbabies. They were truly the light of Gregory’s life. He loved being their Pappy, and anyone who knew him knew just how proud he was of each and every one of them. Haiden, Braiker, Cain, Maverick, and Eli brought him a kind of happiness that was impossible to miss. The love he had for them was unconditional and immeasurable, and being their Pappy was one of the greatest joys of his life. Gregory had a way of making memories simply by being himself. He loved his people fiercely, enjoyed life, and understood that some of the best moments are the ones spent surrounded by family and friends. He leaves behind countless stories, laughs, conversations, and moments that may have seemed ordinary at the time but will now be held especially close. Gregory was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Carl E. and Pearl M. Billips, and his paternal grandparents, Avery C. and Helen M. Wood. Left to carry his memory forward are his loving parents, Clinton Wayne and Wanda Billips Wood; his sister, Jennifer Wood-Gilmore and brother-in-law, Reggie Gilmore; his children, Shawn Hatfield, Zachary Wood Rogich (Kaylee), Cody Hatfield (Serena), Katie Wood (Zak), Colter Wood, Savannah Lowe (Chris), Lane Lowe, and Olivia Aliff; and his bonus daughter, Ashley Hatfield. He also leaves behind the grandbabies he adored so very much: Haiden Love Hatfield, Braiker Michael Hatfield, Cain Waylon Dotson, Maverick Bradley Hatfield, and Eli Kade Rogich. Gregory was also blessed with many close cousins, aunts, uncles, and dear friends who were an important part of his life and who will miss him tremendously. There are some people whose absence can never truly be filled because they occupied such a special place in the lives of those around them. Gregory was one of those people. His family will miss his presence, his laughter, his love, his stories, and simply knowing that he was there. While saying goodbye is incredibly difficult, Gregory’s family will hold tightly to the years they were blessed to have with him. We will speak his name often. We will laugh as we remember the things he said and did. We will tell his stories, and we will tell stories about him. Most importantly, we will make sure his grandbabies always know just how deeply their Pappy loved them. In that way, Gregory’s stories will never really end. They will live on around family tables, at gatherings, in laughter that comes unexpectedly when someone remembers something he said, and in the memories passed from one generation to the next. Gregory lived life to the fullest, loved his family with his whole heart, and leaves behind a legacy that isn't measured in possessions or accomplishments, but in the people who loved him, the stories he shared, and the memories they will carry for the rest of their lives. A private Celebration of Life will be held for close family and friends as they come together to remember Gregory, share stories, laugh, cry, and celebrate a life that meant so much to so many. He was deeply loved. He will be deeply missed. His stories will be told. And he will always be a part of us.
