Bluefield, WV - G. Ross Boyce 87 of 1231 Lebanon Street Bluefield died peacefully at home, surrounded by his family Tuesday May 18, 2010. Ross was born March 10, 1923 at Toll Gate (West Union, WV) a son of the late Lee Roy Boyce and Nellie Bly Ross Boyce. A resident of Bluefield since 1951, Ross began his banking career with Empire National Bank of Clarksburg prior to joining the staff of Flat Top National Bank, and had been part of its growth and development until his retirement as Senior Vice President in 1988. After his retirement Ross served as Secretary-Treasurer of Mercer Funeral Home of Bluefield. Highly respected in his field of business, Ross was former chairman of Group Five of the West Virginia Bankers Association. Ross attended Doddridge County Schools and was a graduate of West Virginia Business College, Clarksburg, WV and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Rutgers University. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving at Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes and Rhineland and Central Europe. Active in both civic and community affairs, Ross was a former chairman of the Bluefield Planning Commission and member Parking Facilities Commission, former director and treasurer of the Mercer County Unit of the American Cancer Society, Metropolitan Dinner Club, and Director of the West Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges. He is past president of Bluefield Lions Club and past cabinet secretary of District 29-N of Lions International. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where he served on and chaired several committees. Ross was also a member of the Riley Vest Post #9 American Legion In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters; Madeline Coffindaffer and Roberta Foley. He is survived by his wife of 61 ½ years Mary Ann Griffith Boyce, two sons; Gerald Ross Boyce, II (Gary) and his wife Debbie of Bluefield, WV and Alan N. Boyce and his wife Beth of Salem, VA, a brother Carlton Boyce of West Union, WV, four grandchildren; Mary Lynn Boyce and her fiancé Emmett Haynes of Bluefield, WV, Lisa Boyce Watkins and her husband Shane of Bluefield, Alan N. Boyce, II and his wife Jennifer of Jacksonville, FL, and Alyson Boyce and her fiancé Ken Stanton of Blacksburg, VA, Step Grandson Brian Minnick and his wife Heather of Lexington, KY, great grandsons; Austin Boyce and Braden Watkins, both of Bluefield, a great-granddaughter Kensley Grace Watkins of Bluefield, WV and step great grandson Cody Minnick of Lexington, KY, and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted Friday May 21, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at Mercer Funeral Home & Crematory with The Rev. Susan Rector and Dr. Don Scott officiating. Interment and Military Honors will be rendered at Monte Vista Park Cemetery at Green Valley by the West Virginia Honor Guard. Serving the family as pallbearers will be Al Modena, Bob Buzzo, Charles Eberheardt , Austin Boyce, Alan N. Boyce, II, Emmett Haynes, Brian Minnick and Shane Watkins.
