Ethel Juanita Brown Akers

Ethel Juanita Brown Akers was born April 9th, 1924 and was called to her heavenly home on April 6th, 2023. She was a devoted Christian, Wife, Mother and Friend. She truly exhibited the gift of service and hospitality as witnessed by her works in her church, family and community. Ethel was born in Rock, West Virginia and graduated from Matoaka High School. Her working career included the Celanese Corporation in Narrows, Virginia, the Mercer County Schools Service department (Ceres School), Nalco Corporation, Post Master for Green Valley Post Office and she also served many years as the secretary and treasurer for the Green Valley/Glenwood Fire department. She was a life long member of Greenview Methodist Church, serving as the women's circle leader, president of the Methodist Women, and a member of the administrative board. On a more personal note, Ethel was a West Virginia woman at heart. She had a feisty spirit, an amazing sense of humor and an endless positive attitude. Using her trusty 22 pistol she could easily defend her garden from pesky critters and was known to remove a snake or two who dared to enter her basement. But, most importantly, she displayed an endless love and kindness to everyone she encountered. She is preceded in death by her parents Ellis and Dacie Brown, her husband. Robert (Bob) S. Akers, two sisters Mae Hudson (Sonny) and Ollie Barnett (Sam) and two brothers, Robert Brown and James Brown. Left to honor her memory are two daughters Sherian Seubott (Alvin) and Linda Whalen (Ronald). Also four grandchildren, Jeff Seubott, Laura Vogel (Josh), Sarah Whalen Maccalupo (Mark), Ryan Whalen (Brooke). She also leaves eight great-grandchildren who also had the privilege, recently, of celebrating her 99th birthday with her. A funeral service will be held on Saturday April 15, 2023 at Mercer Funeral Home at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Brent Brown and Rev. Marva Smearman officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the service hour. Burial will be at Monte Vista Park Cemetery.
