Darvin Nicewonder

Bluefield, WV- Darvin Curtis Nicewonder, 88, of 1319 Franklin Street, Bluefield, WV, died Wednesday January 19, 2011 at the home of his daughter in Bluewell. Born June 29, 1922 in Raven, VA, he was a son of the late Marvin and Ann Nicewonder. Mr. Nicewonder was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in World War II. He was at Normandy Beach on D-Day, and had also served in Cuba, where he helped build Guantanamo Bay, and had served in France. He had been a lifelong resident of Bluefield and was a member of Bluefield Church of God where he enjoyed working the food bank. Mr. Nicewonder had retired from Besty Ross Bakery and had also worked for the City of Bluefield as a driver for Bluefield Area Transit. He had also driven a tractor-trailer for American Van Line. He loved to paint pictures and make flower arrangements for everyone. He never took, but always gave. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret R. Nicewonder; one son, Russell Edwin Nicewonder; and one daughter, Rose Marie Allen. Survivors include two sons, Billy Ray Nicewonder and his wife Wanda of Carol Stream, IL and Michael “Tim” Nicewonder and his wife Gayle of Bluefield, WV; two daughters, Susan Nicewonder of Bluewell, WV and Joanie Nicewonder of Brushfork, WV; two sister, Ruth Nicewonder of Panama City, FL and Peggy Marsh and her husband Bob of Hollywood, CA; one brother, Calvin Nicewonder of Kentucky; twelve grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews; and a special sister-in-law, Judy White of Bluefield. The family will receive friends at Mercer Funeral Home on Friday evening, January 21, 2011 from 6:00p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday January 22, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. from the Mercer Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Danny Scott officiating. Burial will follow at Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton where family members and friends will serve as pallbearers. Military graveside rite will be rendered by the Mercer County Veteran’s Council and the West Virginia Honor Guard.
