Constantine "Denos" Demopoulos

Constantine G. “Denos” Demopoulos Family and friends are mourning the passing of Constantine George (Denos) Demopoulos on August 17, 2019. Denos was born on September 22, 1932 in Leriza-Nemea, Corinth Greece. As a child, he and his family endured and survived World War II in Greece. He graduated from Marazillus Academy with teaching degrees in Math, Chemistry and Physics and taught school in Northern Greece. He served as a Lieutenant in the Greek Army and traveled across Europe with NATO seeking justice after World War II as an intelligence agent. He emigrated to the United States in the late 50’s to pursue his passion for psychology and his life’s work of helping others. When he arrived in the United States, he learned to speak English at the English Language Institute, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan so that he could later attend Concord College. He would joke that he emigrated from Athens (Greece) to Athens (West Virginia). After Concord, he attended Bluefield College, Marshall University and University of Southern Mississippi. Denos was employed at Bluefield Mental Health as a Clinical Psychologist for 45 years, and he especially loved helping coal miners and veterans. Denos also enjoyed his work at Southern Highlands and Mercer County Health Department. He was a member of the first licensing board of psychologists in West Virginia and continued this love through successive appointments by several governors over many years. Denos was a proud American, who never missed voting in an election. He was awarded the Americanism Medal by the John Chapman Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, one of the most prestigious honors conveyed by the DAR in recognition of extraordinary qualities of leadership, trustworthiness, service and patriotism. He deeply loved the Bluefield Rotary and his Rotary buddies and was a member for over five decades. During that time, he was inducted as a Paul Harris Fellow in 1993, and voted Rotarian of the Year in 2014. He also was a member of the Century Club. Denos was an accomplished gardener and loved cooking for family and friends. His annual “Road Kill” barbeques were eagerly anticipated each year. An avid NCAA basketball fan, Denos’ passionate (and unapologetic) devotion to the Duke Blue Devils was widely known. A kind, compassionate, and gentle soul with a ready smile, Denos was a mentor to many, a second father to others, and a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend. Denos was preceded in death by his parents, George and Vasiliki Demopoulos, and his daughter Diana Sue as well as his sister, Giannoula Ligka and brother-in-law, Panagiotis Kanolis. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carolyn, his daughter Mary Campbell (Andrew) of Brentwood, Tennessee, his daughter Margaret Welliver (Tom) of Westminster, Maryland, and four grandchildren Caroline Campbell, James Campbell, Daniel Welliver, and Diana Welliver. He is survived by two sisters, Assimina Kanolis and Ageliki ( Panagiotis) Spiliotis of Kiato, Greece as well as many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins in Greece and Australia. Funeral services will be Thursday, August 22, 2019 at 2 pm at the Mercer Funeral Home Chapel with Craig Hammond officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12 – 2 pm. There will be a private burial following the service. Family and friends will serve the Demopoulos family as pall bearers.
