Bluefield- Peggy Comins Tinder, 79, of 2222 W. Cumberland Road, Bluefield, VA, formerly of Martinsville, VA, died Saturday, February 3, 2007, at home after a lengthy illness. 

   She was born May 24, 1927, in Nanticoke, PA, and was the daughter of the late Frank E. and Ethel M. McCartney Comins, of Bluefield. Ms. Tinder graduated from the Beaver High School class of 1943, and then in 1947 received her bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Her early years were spent in Bluefield where she was a past member of the Trinity Methodist and Bland Street Methodist churches, and was also a past member of the Bluefield Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi.  She later moved to Martinsville, VA, where she was an Assistant Professor of Business Education at Patrick Henry Community College and she retired from there in 1992 after 23 years of service. Ms. Tinder was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Martinsville, VA, for over 30 years and was active in Circle 5, the United Methodist Women, the Clothe-a-Child Foundation, and many Bible studies.   She was a member of the Virginia Retired Teachers Association, and an active volunteer in various community services in Martinsville including the Free Medical Clinic. Peggy was an avid bridge player and belonged to several bridge clubs and the Book Exchange Club.

 

   Surviving her are daughter, Betsy T. Cardwell and husband, Steve, of Rocky Gap, VA; and son, Frank C. Tinder and wife, Kim, of Bluefield, VA; sister, Jean C. Mitchell, of Martinsville, VA; five grandchildren, S. Scott Cardwell of Pulaski, VA; Lindsey E. Cardwell of Rocky Gap, VA; Christopher C. Tinder of Waikoloa, HI; Douglas W. Tinder of Bluefield, VA; Katherine M. Tinder of Columbia, SC; two nieces and a nephew, and many wonderful friends. 

   Memorial services will be conducted from the First United Methodist Church in Martinsville, VA on February 17, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. with the Rev. Ron Mateer officiating. 

   In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions, if desired, may be made to: Total Home Care & Hospice, 101 Westwood Commons, Bluefield, VA 24605 or First United Methodist Church, 146 East Main Street, Martinsville, VA 24112.
