- Retta S. Brown, 96, of Glen Wood Park Retirement Village, formerly of
Fairfield Ave. Bluefield, WV, died Sunday September 24, 2006, in a Bluefield
hospital.
Born April 24, 1910 in
Ballard, WV she was the daughter of the late James and Alice Skaggs Spangler. Retta grew up in Princeton WV where she lived until her marriage in 1941.
Retta was active in
civic organizations. She was a member of the Daughters of American Revolution,
United Daughters of the Confederacy, Fairfield Garden Club, and an avid bridge
player. She mostly enjoyed being a homemaker and traveling with her family. She
was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church were she was active in her
circle, altar guild, and Sunday school class.
She graduated from West
Virginia Business College and worked briefly for the Mercer County Courthouse
and Mercer County School Board.
In addition to her
parents, she was preceded in death by four siblings and her husband Robert S.
Brown who died in 1978.
Survivors include two
daughters, Sara Crews and husband, Jerry of Bluefield, WV, Nancy Newman and
husband, Sam of Satellite Beach, Florida. Six grandchildren and five great
grandchildren also survive: Tammy Cooper and husband Bryan and children Carson
and Chandler; Beth Close and husband Greg and daughter Gracie Kay, Kathy
Disibbio and husband Jay and daughter Isabella, Susan Leslie Bonilla and husband
Fred; Chris Newman and wife Minde and daughter Grace, Jill Scribbins and husband
Paul.
Graveside services will
be conducted Thursday September 28, 2006 at 11:30 am at Monte Vista Park
Cemetery in Green Valley with Dr. Charles Miller officiating. Family members and
friends will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive
friends at Mercer Funeral Home on Thursday September 28, 2006 from 10:00 am – 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the
family requests that memorial contributions, if desired, be made to Trinity
United Methodist Church or Glen Wood Park Retirement Village.
Those attending
graveside services are asked to meet at the funeral home by 11:00 am
Thursday.
