James William Canfield, 64, of 5406 Laurel Fork Road, Rocky Gap, VA, died Friday
September 22, 2006 in Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
Born June 14, 1942, he
was the son of the late Samuel Ralph Canfield and Laura Leota McKitrick
Canfield. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army, having served in the Korean
Conflict. As a Surveyor, Mr. Canfield participated in building the Big Walker
and East River Mountain Tunnels. He was a retired Correctional Officer from
Bland Correctional Center, where he was also a Firearms Instructor. He was also
a member of the National Rifle Association, was an avid hunter and fisherman and
was of the protestant faith.
Survivors included his
wife, Bertha Canfield, of the home; one step daughter, Michelle Roth and her
husband Pete of Charleston, WV; one brother, Johnny Canfield and his wife
Stephanie of Parkersburg, WV; one sister, Louise McCoy of Parkersburg; and
several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will
be conducted Sunday September 24, 2006 at 7:00 p.m. in the Mercer Funeral Home
Chapel with Rev. Joe Schroeder officiating. The Mercer County Veteran’s Council
will provide military rites.
The family will receive
friends at the funeral home on Sunday evening from 5:00 p.m. until the time of
services.
Graveside services will
be held Monday September 25th at 1:00 p.m. at Evergreen South
Cemetery in Parkersburg, WV.
Honorary pallbearers
will be Buddy Waddell, Gary Stallard, Billy Ball, Pete Roth, George VanBlaricom,
and Bob Whited.
