Bluefield, WV-
Robert K. “Bob” Massie, 87,
of 3129 E. Cumberland Road, Bluefield, WV, departed this life at 5:00 a.m.,
November 29, 2006 from complication of pneumonia.
Born May 10, 1919 in
Bluefield, WV, he was the son of the late Terrence W. Massie and Martha Hartwell
Massie. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in World War II. When
Mr. Massie was inducted into the Army, he was assigned to the 773d Tank
Destroyer Battalion, Headquarters Company, 90th Division and he was
promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Mr. Massie received seven battle stars, was
the recipient of the Purple Heart, and two Presidential Unit Citations. He also
received recognition from France, the Croix de Guerre Medal of France and the La
Villa De Metz A. Ses Liberateurs on November 19, 1944. He participated in the
Battle of Falaise Gap, and Battle of the Bulge. His unit was under the command
of General George Patton.
Shortly after his
returning from World War II duties, he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service
for 35 years, retiring as Supervisory of Mails. He had been a member of Bland
Street United Methodist Church for 38 years where he served as head usher and
was a member of the Wesleyan Sunday School Class.
In addition to his
parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Mary G. Massie,
Terrence “Mick” Massie, Fred Massie, Okey Massie, and Janet Massie Sarver.
Survivors include his
wife, Thelma S. Massie, of the home; one son, R. Kelley Massie and his wife
Deborah; one grandson, Ryan Massie; one granddaughter, Megan Massie; one nephew,
Aaron Stone and his wife Sevan; one great niece, Araz Stone; and one great
nephew, Ari Stone.
Funeral services will
be conducted on Saturday December 2, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. from Bland Street United
Methodist Church with Rev. David L. Hall, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow
at Monte Vista Park Cemetery in Green Valley.
Serving as pallbearers
will be Ryan Massie, Byron Massie, Steve Bailey, Jay Disibbio, Jeff Disibbio and
A.A. “Lon” Hopkins.
The family will receive
friends on Friday December 1st from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Mercer
Funeral Home.
Flowers will be
