Bluefield, WV-
Jimmy Funari, 78, of 701 Spring Garden Drive, Bluefield, WV, died at his home
surrounded by his family on Sunday, June 4, 2006. He was born February 22, 1928
in Six, WV, and was the son of the late Alessandro and Marianna Curto Funari.
At the time of his retirement two years ago, Jimmy was President and General
Manager of Consolidated Motor Express, Inc., a trucking company founded in 1952
by his father. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving as Master Sergeant
in the Army and receiving the Bonze Star and Purple Heart for his service.
Jimmy was
a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Bluefield where he faithfully
served as a Ruling Elder and Deacon, as well as enjoyed many leadership roles in
the Sunday School Department. He was also quite active as a member in his
beloved Italian community, the Fratelli Tricolore Lodge #2631 Order of the Sons
of Italy. Jimmy furthered his community involvement as a Charter member of the
Cumberland Heights Lions Club, as well as holding membership in the American
Legion Riley-Vest Post #9. A strong belief in the Red Cross Blood Mobile,
Jimmy donated over 19 gallons of blood to that cause throughout his lifetime.
Jimmy was
preceded in death by his parents, as well as one brother, Angelo Funari of
Bluefield, WV.
Survivors include his wife of fifty-one years, Doris Smith Funari of
Bluefield, WV; two sons, John Robert Funari, and wife Jackie, of Virginia Beach,
VA and Jim L. Funari and wife Susan Chesapeake, VA; two daughters, Mary Ann Hare
and husband, Keith of Scott Depot, WV and Sharon K. Funari of Richmond, VA; two
brothers, Alex Funari, Jr. and Pat of Clearwater, FL and Robert Lee Funari of
Jacksonville, FL; two sisters-in-law, Phyllis Funari of Bluefield, WV and Nancy
Dye of Roanoke, VA; one aunt, Carrie Curto Thomas of Colonial Heights, VA; ten
grandchildren, John G. Funari, John C. Funari, Christina M. Funari, Robert T.
Funari, Christopher K. Hare, Stephanie B. Funari, Michael W. Hare, Joseph T.
Hare, Kayann E. Hare, Daniel S. Hare; two step grandsons, James R. Sowers, Jr.
and L. David Sowers; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation
will be held from 6pm-8pm on Monday June 5, at Mercer Funeral Home, Bluefield,
WV. A memorial service will be conducted at 11am on Tuesday June 6, at
Westminster Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Howard Finkel officiating.
The family
asks that memorial contributions be made in lieu of flowers to either the Bible
in the Schools (PO Box 543, Bluefield, WV 24701), or to the Westminster
Presbyterian Church Building Fund (PO Box 1258, Bluefield, WV 24701).
