
Bluefield, WV-
Ruth Shanklin Roach, 89, passed away July 18, 2006 at the Bluefield Regional
Medical Center. She was born on May 18, 1917 and was the daughter of the late
Charles Baldwin Shanklin and Anna Cathern Howard Shanklin.
She lived in Union, WV
and Huntington, WV, before she became a resident of Bluefield. She was a former
Mercer County Deputy Assessor for the Bluefield area. Ruth was a member of the
First Presbyterian Church where she had taught the children in kindergarten and
took care of the nursery. She also became the Treasurer of the Church and she
served as an Elder in 1993. She was a member of The Women of the Church and was
presented the Presbyterian Life Women Membership Pin. She also loved to play
the piano.
In addition to her
parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Homer Boyd Roach; eight
brothers, Burke Shanklin, Brown Shanklin, Pack Shanklin, Roy Shanklin, Clark
Shanklin, Edward Shanklin, Howard Shanklin and Francis Shanklin; and one sister,
Marceline Shanklin Boyd.
Survivors include one
daughter, Christine “Tina” Roach Dillard of Bluefield, WV; one son, Homer
McGuire Roach and his wife Sherry Murphy Roach of Summersville, SC; one sister,
Christine Shanklin Hunt of Huntington, WV; and she also leaves behind nephews,
nieces and many friends whom she loved very much.
Funeral services will
be conducted Friday July 21, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. in the Mercer Funeral Home Chapel
with Rev. Russell Hatfield officiating. Burial will follow at Monte Vista Park
Cemetery in Green Valley.
The family will receive
friends at the funeral home on Thursday July 20th from 6:00 until
8:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the
family requests memorial contributions, if desired, be made to the Alzheimer’s
Association, 1200 Quarrier Street, Suite 4, Charleston, WV 25301.
