Bluefield, WV -
Lucile Thornton Ogburn Simmerman of 1304 Whitethorn St., Bluefield, W.Va. passed
away Saturday, December 23, 2006, following a short illness.
Born June 5, 1916, in
Republican Grove, VA, she was the daughter of the late Robert Masten Ogburn and
Lucile Thornton Ogburn.
A 1933 Graduate of R.J.
Reynolds High School in Winston Salem, NC, she attended Salem College and later
worked for Chatham Manufacturing until her marriage to Frank Simmerman in 1946.
The couple previously lived in Grundy, VA and Harlan, KY, with a final move to
Bluefield in 1953.
An active member of
Westminster Presbyterian Church, she awarded a Life Membership by Women’s
Ministries in 1991.
She worked as a
pre-school teacher, until widowed in 1968, when she assumed the additional
duties of church secretary. She then served as the church secretary from
1968-1974, under Dr. C. H. Patterson, and continued working with Rev. Al Bixler
and Dr. Roger Gunlock, until her retirement in 1986. She was also active in
circles and organizations in the church, serving on various committees and
programs. She was a good and faithful steward of all the gifts and abilities her
Lord had entrusted to her.
Lucile was a very active
member of East River Mountain Garden Club, the Wednesday Bridge Club and served
as a volunteer in the gift shop of Bluefield Regional Medical Center for over 14
years, with more than 3000 hours of service. She enjoyed knitting, needlework,
sewing, reading and bridge.
In addition to her husband,
she was preceded in death by, her daughter Jennie Lou Simmerman Skaff; sister
Ella Ogburn Rees Wilkinson; brother Robert Masten Ogburn, Jr. and an infant son.
She is survived by her son,
Frank Edward Simmerman, Jr., his wife Jane of Clarksburg, W.Va; daughter
Elizabeth Ogburn. “Libbo”Simmerman of Bluefield and son-in-law, Richard
Joseph“Dick” Skaff, Sr. of Mooresville, NC.
Grandchildren are Elizabeth
Skaff Hammond and husband, Jim, of Charlotte, NC; Richard Joseph Skaff, Jr. and
his wife Jenna of Mooresville, NC; Robert Simmerman Skaff of Miami, FL; Frank E.
“Trey" Simmerman III and Rebecca Wythe Simmerman of Clarksburg, W.Va.; John
Curtis Darby of Bluefield, step-grand daughters Sherri Cynthia. Darby of
Bluefield and Angela Dawn. Darby of Brushfork, W.Va.; and one great grandson,
William James Hammond of Charlotte, NC. Richard and Jenna Skaff are expecting
the second great-grandson in January 2007.
She is also survived by her
brother Richard DeWitt “Dickie” Ogburn and his wife, Katherine “Kitty” of
Winston-Salem, NC. Additional survivors include nieces Susan Ball “SuSu” Rees of
Harker’s Island, NC and Virginia “Ginny” Ogburn Genung and her husband David, of
Clemmons, NC; nephews Robert Bauder “Bobby” Rees and his wife Robbins and their
daughter Danielle of Washington, NC; Richard DeWitt “Bo” Ogburn, Jr. and
his wife Angie, and their children Kylie, Colin and K.C.; Robert Ross “Bobby”
Ogburn and his wife Mindy, and their son, Ross, all of Winston Salem, NC.
A memorial service will be
held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Bluefield, WV on Saturday, December 30,
at 1:30 pm, with Rev. Howard Finkel officiating. The family will receive
friends in Patterson Chapel of the Church from 12 noon until the service.
Following the service,
internment of the cremains will be at the East End Cemetery, Wytheville, VA, at
3:30pm.
