Roberta Cowan Brooks, 100, formerly of Bluefield, WV and West Liberty, WV died
Sunday December 3, 2006 at Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Wheeling, WV.
She was born July 31,
1906 in Newport News, VA and was the youngest daughter of the late Robert and
Mary (Good) Cowan. Roberta was also preceded in death by her husband of 59
years Alfred H. Brooks, and her sisters Mary, Marian, Margaret, Elizabeth and
Euphamia.
Roberta was a member of
the College Avenue Baptist Church and a member of the West Liberty Federated
Church.
A teacher by
profession, Roberta was a gradate of Concord University and was retired from the
Mercer County Schools where she taught Art and English at Wade Junior High
School and Central Junior High School in Bluefield. While at Concord University
she was honored with membership in Kappa Delta Pi the international honor
society in education. After retirement, she and her husband spent the winters
in Naples, FL., and the summers in Bluefield where she continued to paint and do
crafts while assisting clubs, church groups, and other community organizations.
Surviving are her son,
Dr. David C. Brooks and his wife Amelia Garcia of Saint Clairsville, OH, and two
granddaughters, Monica Anne Brooks and Heather Anne Stirewalt and her husband
Christopher.
Funeral services will
be conducted Tuesday December 5, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. in the Mercer Funeral Home
Chapel with Rev. Ed Fisher officiating. The family will receive friends from
1:00 until the time of services at 3:00. Burial will follow at Monte Vista Park
Cemetery in Green Valley.
The family request that
in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to West Liberty Federated
Church, 147 Chatham Street, West Liberty, WV 26074.
