Bluefield, VA – George Stephen Melcher 92 of Bailey Switch Road Bluefield, VA died Friday September 23, 2005 at a Bluefield Hospital. Born May 9, 1913 in Bluefield, he was a son of the late John Roy Melcher and Bulah Hypes Melcher.  He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Bluefield where he was also the Sunday school superintendent. He was a former girls basketball coach for WV Business College, and led his team to the WV State Girls Championship in 1957, and also won the city championship 7 years in a row. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Augusta Melcher and 2 brothers, John Roy Melcher and Frank Melcher.

    He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Francis Nash Melcher of the home, a son Wade Stephen Melcher and his wife Martha Oliberos Melcher of Bluefield, VA, granddaughter Leslee Ann Melcher of Roanoke, VA and grandson Ryan Stephen Melcher and his fiancé’ Mandy Carter of Lynchburg, VA.

    Funeral services will be conducted Monday September 26, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. at Mercer Funeral Home & Crematory of Bluefield with The Rev. William Van Stavern officiating. Entombment will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens Cemetery in Bluefield, VA.

    The family will receive friends Sunday September 25, 2005 at the funeral home from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
