James Melvin Smith, 83, of, 415 Valley View Lane, Bland, VA died Tuesday March
14, 2006 in a Roanoke Hospital.
Born November 8, 1922
Beckley, WV, he was a son of the late Luther and Annie Mae White Smith. Mr.
Smith was a veteran of WW II having served in the U.S. Navy as a Chief Water
Tender and was a retired Mechanic with the Norfolk and Western Railroad. He was
also of the Protestant faith, a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and the
Michigan Technical Institute. Mr. Smith was also a frequent resident of the
Hampton Lodge Campground in Coinjock, NC.
In addition to his
parents he was preceded in death by his wife Alma C. Smith, two sisters, and
four brothers.
Survivors include; two
sisters, Marcelle Mize of Beckley, WV, Betty Scholl of Green Valley, AZ, two
brothers; Martin Smith and wife Eunice of Beckley, WV and Fred Smith and wife
Mary of Joppa, MD, sisters- in- law ; Mary Smith of Beckley, WV, Billie Smith of
Princeton, WV and Janie Barnett and husband Ralph “Bud” Barnett of Bluefield,
WV, numerous nieces and nephews, and a special friend Lillian Shuputnic of
Norfolk, VA.
Military graveside rites
will be conducted Friday March 17, 2006 at 2 P.M. from the Woodlawn Memorial
Park Mausoleum Chapel conducted by the Mercer County Veterans Council.
Pallbearers will be friends of the family. Those wishing to attend services are
asked to meet at the funeral home by 1:30 P.M. The family may be reached at the
