Bluefield, WV
– Richard L. “Dicky” Sowers 55 of 1019 Groveland Drive Bluefield, WV died
Wednesday November 16, 2005 at a Bluefield hospital.
Born November 20, 1949 at Princeton, WV he was a son of the late Walter P.
Sowers and Eula Hedrick Sowers. Dicky was a member and Deacon of First Christian
Church of Bluefield and was a kitchen and bathroom designer, owning and
operating Kitchen’s Plus for many years.
Active in both civic and community affairs, he served in the U.S. Army Reserve,
was a member of Bluefield Elks Lodge # 269, was former treasurer of The
University Club, was active in the Jaycee’s and was past president of Belle
Acres. He loved golfing and fishing, and was a member of Wolf Creek Golf and
Country Club.
Dicky is survived by his wife Rebecca Chapin Sowers, a daughter Ivy Elizabeth
Sowers of Winston-Salem, NC, a son Ward Sterling Sowers of Bluefield, WV, a
sister Susan Johnson and her husband Marquis of Bluefield, VA, a brother Walter
L. “Bucky” Sowers and his wife Louisa of Bluefield, VA and several nieces and
nephews.
Memorial services will be conducted Friday November 18, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. at
Mercer Funeral Home & Crematory with Rev. Russell F. Smith, Jr. officiating.
Serving as honorary pallbearers are Rick Saunders, John Lazenby, Bob Saunders,
Sammy Lewis, Will Smith, Jay Mullen, Jim Layton, Larry Douglas and Doug Jones.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening at the funeral home from 6:00 –
8:00 p.m.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Dicky’s memory be
given to the First Christian Church, General Fund, 2200 Bland Road Bluefield, WV
24701.
